Emma Goldman took up a lot of space. She was a big woman, she was loud, and what she loved most was arguing people to a standstill. Her autobiography is mostly a collection of one-liners, none of them as stunning or clever as she undoubtedly believed. It wouldn’t have made any difference what political system she advocated-—she just wanted to make a lot of noise. “Though I disliked both her ideas and her methods, I admired her,” wrote Margaret Sanger. “She was really like a spring house-cleaning to the sloppy thinking of the average American.”
